Manage Departments

Prev Next

Departments in Scrut represent your organization's internal structure. By default, Scrut organizes artifacts into six departments: GOV, Finance, IT, DevOps, Admin, and HR. Each department must have a designated owner responsible for managing all artifacts associated with that department, including Controls, Policies, and Evidence.

You can access Manage Departments by navigating to Settings → Manage Departments. In this article, we explain how to:

View Departments

  1. Click Settings in the left navigation panel, then click the Manage Departments tile.

  2. The Manage Departments page lists all departments in your workspace.

  3. For each department, you can view the department name, the assigned owner, and the date it was added.

  4. Use the search bar to find a department by name or owner.

  5. You can also filter the list by owner using the Owner filter.

Add a Department

Note:

Department names cannot be edited after they are created. If you need to rename a department, you must delete it and create a new one with the correct name. Department owners, however, can be changed at any time.

  1. Navigate to Settings → Manage Departments.

  2. Click Add Department in the top-right corner.

  3. Enter a name in the Department Name field (50 characters max).

  4. Select an owner from the Owner dropdown.

  5. Click Save.

Change Department Owners

Every department must have exactly one owner. The owner is responsible for overseeing all artifacts associated with that department. You can assign the same person as the owner of multiple departments if needed.

Important:

Even if your organization doesn't use all the departments listed in Scrut, each department must still have an assigned owner. Artifacts in Scrut are linked to departments, and ownership ensures clear accountability.

To change a department's owner:

  1. Click the edit (pencil) icon next to the department.

  2. Select a new owner from the dropdown.

  3. Save your changes.

Export the Department List

Click Export to download the full list of departments as a CSV file. The file includes department names, owners, and the dates they were added.

Audit Logs

Click Audit Log to see a record of all department-related actions — including departments added, owners updated, and exports performed. Each entry shows the action taken, the user who performed it, and a timestamp. You can filter the log by the user who performed the action or by date range, and sort entries from newest to oldest or vice versa.
